Description:
Join Emory alumni and friends for a lecture on the upcoming 2012 presidential election, featuring Alan Abramowitz, Emory University’s Alben W. Barkley professor of political science.
Americans are divided and parties polarized as critical decisions must be made for this year’s presidential and congressional elections. With control of the House, Senate and White House at stake, and sharp differences between Democrats and Republicans on issues ranging from taxes and spending to abortion and gay rights, the 2012 elections promise to be both contentious and exciting. Dr. Alan Abramowitz will discuss how recent political science research may shed light on this year’s races.
Alan Abramowitz is a nationally recognized author and expert on U.S. elections and voting behavior. His latest book, The Polarized Public: Why American Government is so Dysfunctional, deals with the underlying causes of polarization and gridlock in American politics.

PARIS - AUP - The Adventures of Arabic Abroad: Literary Texts in European Translation

The AUP Community is invited to a lecture entitled "The Adventures of Arabic Abroad: Literary Texts in European Translation."
On Monday, May 7, at 10:00am, in G31.
There has been growing interest in recent years in Arabic literature in English and French translation, as well as the ways in which classical and modern works of Arabic literature have crossed linguistic and cultural boundaries. The Department of Comparative Literature and English and the Masters in Cultural Translation present a breakfast seminar with translator Richard Jacquemond for a discussion of these issues.
Richard Jacquemond is professor of Modern Arabic Language and Literature at the Université d’Aix-Marseille, where he is chair of the Department of Oriental Studies. He has translated many works of modern Arabic literature into French and is the author of works on Arabic literature and translation in English, French and Arabic.

The Bluest Eye, by Toni Morrison
The Things to fear was the Thing that made her beautiful, and not us.
The Bluest Eye (L’oeil le plus bleu), by Toni Morrison
Built around an excerpt from The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, this performance is the
product of an encounter. For the past four months, students from the collège Martin
Luther King in Villiers-le-Bel, the collège Stéphane Mallarmé in Paris, and NYUParis
have met to explore the meaning of the novel, its American context and its relevance to
contemporary France. A montage of dance, video, acted and spoken text, the spectacle
is also built around students’ reflections about their experience and the observations
they have gained from this exchange. If Pecola, 12 years old, the heroine of the novel,
submits to the sorrow and racism she sees around her, other voices raise the promise of
resistance, the possibility of a regenerated world

As part of our long year theme « The Francophone Americas:
Perspectives on Haiti» and the NYU Paris/BNF Cycle «They

borders»
Lecture with Lyonel Trouillot, Haitian writer
Novelist and poet, Lyonel Trouillot was born in 1956 in the Haitian capital of Port-auPrince. When he was fourteen, his family moved to the United States, but five years later
he returned to Haiti. Although he began his studies with law, he was very quickly noticed
for his writing. Having published numerous poems and critical texts in several Haitian
and Diaspora newspapers and scholarly journals, he is also the co-founder of Haitian
magazines such as Langaj, Les cahiers du vendredi and Lire Haiti. He has taught at both
the high school and university level and today, he still gives courses at the Ecole Normale
Supérieure de l’Université d’Etat d’Haïti. He is the editor-in-chief of the magazine Cultura
and the daily newspaper Le progressiste haïtien.
As part of a programme to acquaint our students and the French public with contemporary literature both
in English and French, New York University in France, in association with the Bibliothèque Nationale François
Mitterrand, has launched a series of encounters in which Anglophone and Francophone writers are invited to
discuss their work before an audience of students and Parisians. Held in the auditorium of the Bibliothèque
Nationale, these sessions are simultaneously interpreted to both the authors and the audience with the help
of interpreters furnished by UNESCO. The sessions are chaired by the journalist and documentary filmmaker
Marie-Dominique Montel. An actor is also on hand to read extracts from the writers’ work.
Marie-Dominique Montel is a television and radio
journalist (Europe 1, France Télévision, France
Musique). She has produced many documentaries
for television, one of which was a series on English
(Graham Greene, T.E. Lawrence, Arthur Conan Doyle)
as well as French authors (Choderlos de Laclos, Aimé
Césaire, Jacques Charbonne).
Paul Marchadier began his theatre career by taking
courses with Jean-Louis Bihoreau and Jean-Laurent
Cochet at the Conservatory. He has performed plays
written by a wide range of authors: Racine, Ribes,
Pagnol, Labiche. He then joined the PHENIX Troupe
and traveled around France in a caravan performing
and singing. He divides his time between France and
Italy and performs in street and children plays as
well as organizes workshops for children and adults.
Lastly, in 2008 he had the honor to join Jean-Claude
Penchenat’s troupe (Troupe du Campagnol).

Evenings with an Author: Judith Rock
Judith Rock presents The Eloquence of Blood, book two of her The Charles du Luc Historical Mystery series.
The Paris Charles saw from his window on his first night at the Jesuit college was not our Paris. But it was a city already very old, and I think that when “he kissed his hand to sleeping Paris”, he felt its mysterious magic.” – extracted from Judith Rock’s website
In the second installment of her historical mystery series, Rock places The Eloquence of Blood in 1686 Paris. The book opens with the death of Martine Mynette as she tries to prove her relation to the last surviving Mynette heir, claiming the inheritance that the family had planned to donate to the Jesuit school, Louis le Grand. Charles du Luc, the series’ protagonist, takes on solving the murder, focusing on the Jesuits implicated in the crime.
About the author
Judith Rock’s eclectic career path has informed and inspired her writing. She is a modern dancer and choreographer, and founder of Body and Soul Dance Company in Berkeley, CA. She was an assistant professor of dance at at St. Olaf College in Minnesota, and became half of the tap-dance-and-talk duo A Loose Association with cabaret performer Tom Knudsen. Following her cabaret experience she was a police officer for several years. She also has a doctorate in Theology and Art from the Graduate Theological Union, and her doctoral research became the root of her Charles du Luc Historical Mystery Series.

PARIS - Mona Bismarck American Center for Art & Culture - The Varian Fry Project: A Workshop Performance in the Word for Word style

The Varian Fry Project: A Workshop Performance in the Word for Word style

For 17 years, San Francisco's Word for Word Performing Arts Company has been bringing fully staged theater productions of great short stories to Paris: now Word for Word Artistic Director Susan Harloe, along with Christopher Mack, collaborates with La Compagnie Razno at the MonaBismarck American Center on The Varian Fry Project, based on Varian Fry's wartime autobiography, Surrender on Demand.
An American journalist who witnessed firsthand the rise of fascism while traveling in Germany in the late 1930s, Varian Fry immediately realized the consequences for the outspoken anti-Nazis, artists and intellectuals, and specifically Jews.
In 1940, Varian Fry went to Marseille to help liberate 200-some refugees, with a few thousand dollars, thinking it would take him no more than a month. Upon arrival, he saw such great need that he remained with other international rescue workers, forging passports, organizing prison breakouts, leading escapes through the Pyrenees, laundering money; in short, everything humanly possible to help refugees escape the threat of detention and certain death. Despite the constant threat of his own arrest, Varian Fry refused to leave Marseille until he was forcibly expelled to the United States in 1941. In that time, he aided nearly 2000 men and women in their escape from the Nazi regime, among them Marc Chagall, Andre Breton, Jacques Lipchitz, Andre Masson, Hannah Arendt, and Max Ernst.
Varian Fry is one of only three Americans to be honored as Righteous Among the Nations at Yad Vashem, in Israel.

Book Discussion Group
10:30hrs
Slowly we continue to discuss the Nobel Prize winners for literature in our group. Having already read books by Pamuk, Le Clézio, Buck, Vargas Llosa, Doris Lessing, Coetzee, Naipaul, Nadine Gordimer and Saramago, this month we are reading Herta Müller. I don’t know if her name rings a bell with you (it doesn’t with me!) but in 2009 she was awarded this most prominent literature prize. I have read four books of hers with the Dutch literature group and I would like to share her special prose and Romanian background with you.
Herta Müller (b.1957) is a Romanian-born German novelist and essayist. She has written widely about dictatorship in her native country and the unmoored life of the political exile. The Swedish Academy described her while announcing her award as someone “who, with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the disposed”. Her prize came on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the fall of Communism in Europe. She is the first German writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature since Günter Grass in 1999, the thirteenth writing in German (since the prize was given in 1901) and the twelfth woman! Just five of her nineteen works have been translated into English.
Ms. Müller was born and raised in the German-speaking town of Nitzkydorf in Romania. Her father served in the Waffen-SS during WW II and her mother was deported to the Soviet Union in 1945 and sent to a work camp in what is now Ukraine. As a university student studying German and Romanian literature, Ms. Müller opposed the Communist regime of Nicolae Ceausescu and joined Aktionsgruppe Banat, a group of dissident writers who sought freedom of speech. In 1982 she wrote her first work, a collection of short stories, while working as a translator for a factory. The stories were censored by the Romanian authorities and Müller was fired from the factory after refusing to inform for the Securitate secret police. While she was working as a kindergarten teacher, the uncensored manuscript of ‘Niederungen’ (Nadirs) was smuggled to Germany and published there to instant critical acclaim. This, and early other works, depicted life in a small village and describes the repression faced by its residents. Her later novels including ‘The Appointment’ and ‘The Land of the Green Plums’ approach allegory as they graphically portray the brutality suffered by modest people living under totalitarianism.
We will discuss ‘Herztier’ (Heart-Beast) translated as ‘The Land of the Green Plums’. According to Larry Wolff, reviewing the book for The New York Times, the poetic quality of the language is essentially connected to its author's objective: “the author seeks to create a sort of poetry out of the spiritual and material ugliness of life in Communist Romania.”. It’s not an easy read, because it is largely, but not entirely, devoid of humor. It is the story of a group of young people in Ceausescu’s time who, having left their impoverished villages for university in search for education and camaraderie, find their hopes quickly dashed. The narrator and her friends feel the impact of an impressive regime, constant surveillance, harassment, humiliating interrogations and police brutality. Eventually, the friends betray each other and themselves.
This is a highly autobiographical account (to the point where you can wonder how confidently you can actually declare it a work of fiction) as apparently the book was written in response to the news of the possible Securitate organized deaths of two of her friends. I found the prose simple, blurred to the point where at times we are left unsure as to what exactly is going on which is quite understandable in a country that has been driven mad by fear. The mood of the novel is more important than the plot. It’s a moving and disturbing master piece and we can be lucky that we are living in a free country, where we can discuss freely the upcoming elections.
Let Holly or me know what you will bring for our pot luck lunch, perhaps a Kartoffel Salat (potato) or Bratwurst?

PARIS - WHSmith - Mary McAuliffe will present and sign her book Clash of Crowns

On Thursday 10th May at 7pm, Mary McAuliffe will present and sign her book Clash of Crowns: William the Conqueror, Richard Lionheart, and Eleanor of Aquitaine - A Story of Bloodshed, Betrayal, and Revenge.
Conflict between England and France was a fact of life for centuries, but few realize that its origins date from the time of the Vikings, when a Norse chieftain named Rollo established himself and his progeny in Normandy. In this compelling and entertaining history, Mary McAuliffe takes the reader back to those dark and turbulent times when Rollo’s descendants, the dukes of Normandy, asserted their dominance over the weak Frankish monarchy—a dominance that became especially threatening after Duke William conquered England in 1066, giving him a royal crown.
Despite this crown, William the Conqueror and his royal successors remained dukes of Normandy, with feudal obligations to their overlord, the king of France. This naturally fostered an ongoing hostility between the French and English crowns that, as McAuliffe convincingly shows, became ever more explosive as the strength and territorial holdings of the English monarchs grew. Conflict erupted regularly over the years, and Eleanor of Aquitaine’s desertion of one camp for the other only added fuel to the long-simmering feud.
McAuliffe takes the reader back to this dramatic era, providing the fascinating background and context for this “clash of crowns.” She offers colorful insights into Richard Lionheart and Eleanor of Aquitaine as well as lesser-known French and English monarchs, especially Philip II of France. Philip (later called Philip Augustus) proved a determined opponent of Richard Lionheart, and their cut-throat rivalry not only created fatal divisions within the Third Crusade, but also culminated in an explosive faceoff at Richard’s newly built Château-Gaillard, the seemingly impregnable gateway to empire. The outcome would shape the course of English and French history for centuries to come.

Corinne Alexandre-Garner, Georges Hoffmann, Marc Parent and Frédéric Jacques Temple will discuss the life and work of Lawrence Durrell
The Village Voice Bookshop has the pleasure of inviting you to meet Corinne Alexandre-Garner, editor of Dans l'ombre du soleil grec for La Quinzaine littéraire, Louis Vuiton, Georges Hoffman, director of l'Agence Hoffmann and author and producer of the film A Parisian Friendship, Marc Parent, literary agent and former Buchet-Chastel editor for Petite musique pour amoureux, and Frédéric Jacques Temple, novelist, poet, French translator and biographer of Henry Miller, and author of the film directed by Daniel Costelle Chez Lawrence Durrell. The panel will discuss the life and work of Lawrence Durrell in celebration of the author's centenary. The evening will be followed by a screening of the two films, A Parisian Friendship and Chez Lawrence Durrell at the Action Christine cinema.
Lawrence Durrell was born in 1912 in India. His first authentic literary work was The Black Book, published in Paris in 1938 under the aegis of Henry Miller and Anaïs Nin. «In the writing of it I first heard the sound of my own voice», he later wrote. The novel was praised by T.S. Eliot who would publish his first collection of poems in 1943. From his years spent in Greece he drew a number of books on Cyprus, Rhodes and the other Greek islands but he is most famous for The Alexandria Quartet, inspired by a wartime sojourn in Egypt and completed in Southern France where he settled permanently in 1957. Out of his new dwelling would come a final masterpiece, The Avigon Quintet. Durrell’s first novel, Pied Piper of Lovers, was published in France in 2012 by Buchet-Chastel under the title, Petite musique pour amoureux, in a translation by Annick Le Goyat.
Drawing from Durrell’s paintings, travel writing, poetry and letters, notably his correspondance with Henry Miller, a lifelong friend, Dans l’ombre du soleil grec – edited and prefaced by Corinne Alexandre-Garner – gives the reader insight to the rich and complex work of one of the last century’s major authors whose sensuous and solar writing not only describes the beauty of beloved places but also contrasting inner-landscapes.

Thu 10 May 2012 - 19h30
A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES with Judith Merians: The Shawshank Redemption
How does story telling in words differ creatively from story telling in films? A Night at the Movies will compare excerpts from books and plays with scenes from the film versions of the literary works. Each spring and each autumn scenes from a different and popular book/play and its film version will be featured and each selection will exemplify a different aspect of filmic story telling. Judith Merians will explain why films require their own creative conventions and how filmmakers employ visual and aural techniques to enhance and deepen the tale with as few words as possible. And to add to the enjoyment Judith will fill you in on some of the behind-the-scenes history of the evening's film. No RSVP required, just drop on in and join us for a Night at the Movies.
Stephen King masterfully writes of the bleakness in ordinary life and the horror that arises in everyday places. In The Shawshank Redemption the Shawshank prison is the hell on earth in which the story of two convicted murderers and unlikely friends, Andy and Red, unfolds. How did King and the director Frank Darabont, create empathy in the readership and audience with two such characters in this claustrophobic setting? Discover the subtext of the story in which Andy, the force of hope, arrives in a forsaken place, changes it, and moves on. He is the classic mythic figure.About Judith Merians
Judith Merians has been an entertainment attorney and business executive for the Hollywood Studios and independent production companies for 27 years. She has taught the business, finance, and legal aspects of filmmaking at the University of California Los Angeles Extension Film School for 12 years and in film schools around the world and has spoken at many film conferences including the Cannes Film Festival and the American Film Market seminars. She is currently a consultant to independent filmmakers and film school professor.

PARIS - NYU Paris - «The Francophone Americas : Perspectives on Haiti» Haiti, a Living Portrait, theater director : Cécile Cotté

As part of our long year theme «The Francophone Americas :
Perspectives on Haiti»
Haiti, a Living Portrait, theater director : Cécile Cotté
This play combines a group of texts written by contemporary Haitian authors. It will recount
this country’s history which is simultaneously grandiose—the only successful slave revolt,
the first black republic—and tragic—colonization, numerous dictatorships, and the 2010
earthquake…
A group of wandering clowns will tell these stories. Soothsayers and jokers, they mock
society, themes of power and religion, as well as ridicule the world. They parody humanity
but also create space for tragedy. These clowns belong to madness, to the madness that
is necessary for the safeguarding of truth.

Reading in the digital age: two book discussions and a film screening
As a library community, all of us have an interest in the future of reading. The information revolution and the Internet have called into question the most basic assumptions about how knowledge is disseminated, accessed, archived, protected, created, understood, exploited….
Members of the American Library in Paris will have a chance to discuss these questions in one month’s time during an afternoon symposium on reading in the digital age. It’s all happening on the afternoon of Saturday 12 May. Fittingly, first we will read books and talk about them, and then we will watch something on a screen and then talk about it.
14h00 – 15h15: A discussion of The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains, by Nicholas Carr This short book is a quiet and passionate lament for the decline in reflection and concentration that the author claims is the byproduct of the new screen culture. It grew out of an Atlantic Monthly article. Excerpts from The Shallows have also been published by Wired magazine, National Public Radio, National Geographic, and Gizmodo.
15h30 – 16h45: A discussion of The Googlization of Everything, by Siva Vaidhyanathan. Despite its trivializing title, this is a serious study of just how pervasive and permanent – and possibly dangerous – Google itself has become as a planetary information utility. Something about the shorter version. Listen to the interview with Siva Vaidhyanathan on Spark, hosted by Nora Young or watch a video of a presentation given by Siva Vaidhyanathan at Stanford University hosted on YouTube.

- 17h00 – 19h00: A screening of Connected: An Autoblography about Love, Death, and Technology, a documentary by Webby Awards founder Tiffany Shlain. A highly personal and critically praised exploration of the new technological world. After the 80-minute screening, participants are invited for refreshments and a chance to finish the afternoon’s conversations. Learn more about the film online.
All three discussions will be led by Charles Trueheart, the Library director, and others.

MARSEILLE (13) - MAABN Mediterranean Anglo-American Business Network - What will be the impact on US and GB tourism to the area?

Marseille-Provence, European Capital of Culture in 2013
What will be the impact on US and GB tourism to the area?
Conference/debate Thursday 15 May 2012
The Anglo-American Community, strongly anchored in Marseille-Provence, represents an extensive network of professionals and companies in many different areas of activity. One such area is tourism, with Anglo-American involvement in the hotel and restaurant trades, transport (from the cruise business to airlines to local services), tour operators, travel agencies and e-tourism. Another is the world of the creative industries and cultural events.
Marseille-Provence, European Capital of Culture 2013 will attract numerous visitors from abroad, many of them English-speaking with large contingents from the USA and Great Britain. Some will have been here before, others will be first-timers here for the 2013 programme. They will be flying in, driving in or arriving by high-speed train; they will be staying in the region’s hotels, eating in Provençal restaurants and generally using local amenities. They will be attending the many exhibitions and events being put on in different parts of the territory throughout the year.
The MAABN, together with the British and American consulates, is raising the debate around a number of important questions:
- What is the 2013 programme and how will it appeal to the Anglo-American community?
- What is the history of US and GB tourism in the area?
- In what ways will 2013 bring in new Anglo-American visitors? What promotional actions are planned?
- How is the city and the surrounding territory organising itself to receive these tourists?
- Will the airport introduce new services in 2013, both in terms of destinations and reception/welcome?
The MAABN is delighted to welcome speakers from:
- The Marseille-Provence 2013 European Capital of Culture team
- The Regional Tourist Board for the PACA region
- Bouches-du-Rhône Tourism
- The Marseille Tourist Office
- The CCI Marseille-Provence and its Esprit Client team
- Marseille-Provence Airport
British Consul Simon Taylor and US Consul Philip Richards will also be present along with other guests.

PARIS - American Club Paris - “Experiencing Golf Poetry Read golf poetry out loud"

Leon S. White, PhD
Tuesday, May 15 -7 :00 pm
“Experiencing Golf Poetry
Read golf poetry out loud, It will lower your score; And if one poem doesn’t do it, Read two or three more!
A Little Golf History.” The first reference to golf is found in an Act of the Scottish Parliament in 1457 that bans the game! But the origins of the game are unknown. However, this didn’t stop an anonymous 19th century poet from giving us a charming version of the story in verse.
The earliest poem to include a reference to golf was published in Edinburgh in 1638. An Edinburgh medical student penned the first instructional golf poem in his diary in 1687. Furthermore, the first separately printed golf book was a 358-line mock-heroic poem first published in 1743.
For the last six years Leon White has been collecting poetry about golf, written by golfers¬ - a little known area of the golf literature. As his collection of poems increased, it became evident that reading these verses constituted a new way to experience all the attributes of the game. “I wanted to share what I had discovered with golf enthusiasts worldwide, so first I began developing a book and then I started writing a Blog. The book, Golf Course of Rhymes – Links between Golf and Poetry Through the Ages, with a Foreword by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., was published in 2011 and is available on Amazon.com. The Blog continues.”
Talk will be followed by a cocktail

PARIS - American Library - AAWE @ The Library - How are languages learned?

Tue 15 May 2012 - 19h30
AAWE @ The Library - How are languages learned?
What is the difference between acquiring a language and learning a language formally? What do first and second language learning have in common? What does “bilingual” mean? If you're living in a multilingual household and want to know more, curious about language acquisition or teach in a multilingual classroom, this evening is for you.
During our open discussion we'll explore the great variety of learning situations from “picking up” a language to learning in a classroom and examine the diverse factors involved, including attitude towards the language and what makes for successful learning.
Incorporated into the conversation will be the various perspectives - your own learning and experience, information gleaned from the field of language acquisition and applied linguistics, as well as 40 years of language teaching expertise. This promises to be a rich discussion, full of provocative questions, and perhaps, just a few definite answers.

Art on View: Painted Words - From Page to Picture
As a writer, I’ve been fascinated—captivated—by words and letters since I was a child. For me, they have a vivid, palpable quality—you can almost taste them sometimes. I try and incorporate this into my writing, be it poetry or prose, essay or interview. In the past few years, I started drawing images in the margins of my notebook (I still write a lot out longhand), trying to sketch out what I’m attempting to write. A painter friend said, “Why not add color? Pick up some paints and give it a try. See what happens.” I tried. And then again. And I liked it—a lot.
“Painted Words: From Page to Picture,” is the result of this passionate project.
About the Artist
Heather Hartley is author of Knock Knock (Carnegie Mellon University Press, 2010) and Paris Editor for Tin House. Her poems, essays, and interviews have appeared in or on PBS NewsHour, The Guardian, The Rumpus, and other venues and anthologies including The Best Nonrequired American Reading and Food and Booze: A Tin House Literary Feast. She has curated Shakespeare and Company Bookshop’s weekly reading series and has taught creative writing at the American University of Paris. She’s been painting for many years—working on translating words into colors.

Wine Tasting: Jura and Savoy regions

Located between Burgundy and Switzerland, this cool climate wine region, the smallest in surface in France and undoubtedly also the most complicated, produces wines with some similarity to Burgundy. Jura wines are distinctive and unusual wines, made from grape varieties such as Savagnin, Poulsard, Trousseau, and Chardonnay. We will be tasting our usual 5 or 6 bottles, guided by our wine expert whom we met originally on a tour at the Musée du Vin in Paris.

Lunch during the 65rd Cannes Film Festival
Belle Plage Restaurant - Bd Jean Hibert - 06400 CANNES
Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 12H00
Our May event will permit you to enjoy the atmosphere of the Cannes Film Festival, and to have an excellent lunch with Club members and guests at the Belle Plage Restaurant on the Cannes beach which many of you enjoyed for the last few years
Cannes is very animated during the Festival from May 16-27, 2012 and the atmosphere can perhaps be best enjoyed on foot. The Croisette beach restaurants are either privately booked or excessively expensive, so we have chosen one on the Plage du Midi, just beyond the Old Port across from the Square Mistral (see map enclosed). The walk to the Palais des Festivals is an easy and pleasant one along the sea and the port.
We will gather for aperitifs at 12 noon to facilitate your travel and parking on what should be a festive day. Chef Christian Bel will seduce your gourmet senses with an exquisite menu accompanied by a well chosen selection of wines. We will have the honor of welcoming a seasoned and successful film producer as our guest speaker.

PARIS - American Library - Urban Sketching with Tom Byrne

Sat 19 May 2012 - 13h30
Urban Sketching with Tom Byrne
One of the things which I love to do in Paris is urban sketching, drawing in the streets and cafes. The streets of Paris offer unrivalled opportunities to capture incredible architecture in
historical and comfortable surroundings. Adults and children are welcome.
For people who want to join us, there is no pressure to create anything in particular. Just take part. I'll do a few demonstrations and anyone who wants to focus on more serious drawing techniques can stick close by. The main thing is to go out and do it. People feel more comfortable doing this in a group so that's what we will have.
About Tom Byrne
Painting is and has been the over riding motivation in my life. To create and explore using the medium of paint and sometimes sculpture, are my main drives. We experience the world through light, colour and form. The mysterious element of reflected light passing through our eyes, to our brain, transforming our understanding of the world. Other senses are effected in the same way and most people take these things for granted. As an artist I pause to study these things and the way that they interact with me, others, nature and energy. I express the impressions I receive in paint and sculpture so that others might also pause to understand what has passed and is.
Learn more about Tom Byrne and his exhibit You are "how" you read on display Tuesday 03 April - Sunday 13 May. Access to the exhibit is free for Library members, as well as users with a Library day or week pass. Visit the membership page for details.

There are no particular difficulties along the way, but bear in mind the fact that the summit is at 900 metres altitude approx. For any further information please call me.
MARSEILLE (13) - Anglo-American Group of Provence - Family Ramble

Family Ramble
10:30hrs
Venue: Etang de Berre, Saint-ChamasThe May family ramble in Saint-Chamas will be another new destination for the group.
There is no major difficulty on the ramble so the walk is perfect for all ages and, of course, well-behaved doggies as they are very welcome. We will be walking by the Etang de Berre through a natural bird reserve and salt water lakes. If we are lucky enough we will see pink flamingos nesting among the bushes. Have your cameras handy as the views of pink flamingos are amazing! The pathway is wide and flat but it will be preferable to wear sturdy shoes as we will sometimes be walking on stony ground.
Also we are fair weather walkers, so if it is raining the ramble will keep for another time. However, in May the weather in Provence can be hot. In that case be sure to bring plenty of water, as well as your picnic lunch and perhaps something to share with other ramblers.
It is not necessary to sign up, but if you need a lift please phone Annie a few days beforehand.
We want to start the walk at 10:45hrs, so please allow enough time to arrive (about 45mins from Aix as a guide) park and sort out your picnic things. We leave on time (in fairness to everyone) and do not wait for latecomers.

Auguste Renoir Moulin de la Galette, detail © Musée d’Orsay
Modern Paris, the Paris we know today, was designed at the height of Impressionism. The Orsay’s specialist in Impressionism and Renoir, Sylvie Patry will take you back in time to the days when Auguste Renoir and his best friend Claude Monet sought to capture so directly the burgeoning metropolis of Paris, with its new trains, factories, and streets, filled with construction. Sylvie would especially like to share the life of Renoir behind the painting Le Moulin de la Galette. Sylvie has been a major contributor to the the development of the Orsay’s collection as well as curator of such exhibitions as , Fernand Hodler (1853–1918) and, in 2006, Maurice Denis (1870–1943). She has written extensively on Denis, Renoir, neo-Impressionism, and Fantin-Latour. Sylvie was a Scholar in Residence at the Clark Institute, Williamstown, MA., in 2008 researching the late career of Renoir.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER

Margot Esther Borden is a psychotherapist, author and consultant living in Paris, France. The core of her work revolves around transforming consciousness so that it stems from our deepest, inner self. In turn, this transforms our attitudes and actions giving them such qualities as congruence, inspiration, collaboration, respect for people and planet; win-win reasoning and actions.
Her work as an international consultant consists of market research both internally, to identify the soul of the organization and align all levels and aspects of the organization to its highest unifying qualities and externally, with consumer groups. Her model is based on integral psychology, a soul-based psychology inspired from ancient Eastern wisdom, rather than traditional marketing which is based on the ego-centered approach of depth psychology. The result of her work leads to companies and brands contributing to raising consciousness and fulfilling humankind’s deep, noble needs rather than just the surface needs. The latter leads to restlessness and frustration and the former leads to peace, well-being and harmony. Some by-products of her work are sustainable development and CSR: www.TheIntegralPerspective.com.

The Role of Women (and many men) in AmCham France History
QUESTION: How influential have women been in AmCham France History?
ANSWER: Not very (with some rare exceptions) but...
...this is a great starting-off point for learning the fascinating history of
THE OLDEST U.S. BUSINESS ORGANIZATION OUTSIDE THE U.S.!
Philippe Rochefort, AmCham France's De Facto Historian, will offer facts, figures, anecdotes and answers to questions about where, when and how all our wonderful opportunities for networking, lobbying and info sharing got their start.
(And he will in fact highlight some key Chamber women along the way!)
We look forward to sharing with you what promises to be a very interesting evening!

Maybe Adrian was a little more serious than the others, certainly more intelligent, but they all swore to stay friends for life.

Mercredi 30 mai - 18h30
Degas et le nu
Xavier Rey - Conservateur Peinture, Musée d'Orsay
Museum of Fine Arts de Boston.
collectionneurs et d'autres musées américains (Philadelphia Museum of Art,
Art Institute Chicago, Metropolitan Museum New York).

PARIS - WHSmith - Anne Korkeakivi will present and sign her novel An Unexpected Guest.

On Thursday 31st May at 7pm, Anne Korkeakivi will present and sign her novel An Unexpected Guest.
Clare Moorhouse, the American wife of a high-ranking diplomat in Paris, is arranging an official dinner crucial to her husband's career. As she shops for fresh stalks of asparagus and works out the menu and seating arrangements, her day is complicated by the unexpected arrival of her son and a random encounter with a Turkish man, whom she discovers is a suspected terrorist. More unnerving is a recurring face in the crowd, one that belonged to another, darker era of her life. One she never expected to see again. But it can't be him--he's been dead for 20 years.... Like Virginia Woolf did in Mrs. Dalloway, Anne Korkeakivi brilliantly weaves the complexities of an age into an act as deceptively simple as hosting a dinner party.
An alluring debut novel in which a diplomat's wife's future hangs on planning the perfect Paris dinner--and a concealing a terrible secret. Like Virginia Woolf did in Mrs. Dalloway, Anne Korkeakivi brilliantly weaves the complexities of an age into an act as deceptively simple as hosting a dinner party.
This beautifully modulated first novel follows one day in the life of a British diplomat's American wife as she organizes a dinner party crucial to her husband's career... Struggling to sort out questions of loyalty, moral expediency and love while calmly carrying out the mundane responsibilities of her life, Clare finds a path to forgiveness and redemption. Yes, this is an homage to Virginia Woolf; echoes of Clarissa Dalloway resonate through Clare Moorhouse... but Clare takes very different lessons from her day than Clarissa. With this seemingly slight day-in-the-life tale, Korkeakivi produces a knowing comedy of manners, a politically charged thriller and a genuinely moving study of the human heart.' -Kirkus, Starred Review
'Korkeakivi fluidly fuses the past and present, building a solid character in Clare and powerfully exploring whether redemption from past regrets is possible and the lengths one must go to attain it.' - Publisher's Weekly
PARIS - WHSmith - Anne Korkeakivi will present and sign her novel An Unexpected Guest.

GRENOBLE (38) - Working Women’s Network Grenoble - "Cartoon drawing for trainers, facilitators & presenters"

Come join us on Saturday June 2 for Cartoon drawing for trainers, facilitators & presenters, next in the ongoing series of Professional Development Seminars presented by the Working Women’s Network of Grenoble.
Do you need to get ideas across clearly and memorably to others?
Have you ever watched someone draw a cartoon right in front of you – to help explain a point, or to bring an idea to life? If you have, you’ll know what a powerful method of communication a simple drawing can be.
If you’re a trainer, presenter, teacher, facilitator, consultant or coach, and you’d like to be able to draw cartoons to help you get your message across, then this unique opportunity is for you. You will discover that you can draw after all, and that you can use drawing to make your communication really distinctive.
This is a full-day, hands-on seminar for people who want to be able to:
- use the simplicity of cartoons to get across complex ideas and information
- improvise with cartoons to bring more spontaneity and humour into their presentations and training
- produce entertaining and memorable visual aids, in advance or on the spot.
In this seminar you will learn the fundamentals of cartoon drawing with an experienced professional cartoonist and trainer. This includes how to draw your own ‘live’ cartoons, and how to develop your own visual metaphors to help get your message across.
Can't draw to save your life? Come along and find out what you are really capable of.
Register now! This seminar is 45€ with lunch / 30€ without lunch for WWNG members, and 85€ for non-members (lunch included).

PARIS - American Library - Concert : Quatuor Hoffmann

Sun 03 June 2012 19h30
Founded in 2008, Quatuor Hoffmann has a bold mission: to play string quartet repertoire on period instruments that correspond to the composer’s era. From the first quartets of the 18th century to more recent pieces, the musical form evolves hand in hand with the instruments. Of the belief that music is more convincing when performed on the instruments for which it was written, the players of Quatuor Hoffmann readily adjust their playing technique to the instruments they play to highlight the character of each work. The quartet’s programs are designed to mix styles, languages and composers.
About the musicians
All graduates of the Conservatoire de Paris and CRR, the musicians study with renowned instructors Jean Philippe Vasseur,Alessandro Moccia, Stéphanie Marie Degand, ageet Zweistra,Hilary Metzer, Christophe Coin, and David Watkin among others. They play regularly in such festivals as "music Days in Spring Dignois" (April 2009), festival de Saintes (room for young musicians, July 2009) and the Auditorium Theatre of Poitiers (September 2009).
